thinkspace was entrusted with the revitalisation of The Tabernacle, Distell’s famous Rare Wine Library in Stellenbosch, which houses some of South Africa’s rarest and most spectacular vinous treasures.
The objective was to give the space a fresh new look while still honouring its heritage and the product it represents.
Upon entering The Tabernacle, visitors are greeted by a captivating history wall that showcases a curated selection of art and vintage wines. This feature serves to narrate the rich story of the area and Distell’s remarkable journey.
As guests continue their exploration, they descend into the cellar, where several enhancements have been made to elevate their experience. Notable additions include a modern catering kitchen and upgraded restroom facilities, featuring a historical map of Stellenbosch adorning the walls as wallpaper.
The cellar itself has retained its old-world charm while receiving a contemporary touch through the incorporation of stylish furniture pieces, an integrated bar, and a striking custom rug. To allow for a glimpse into the collection of antique wines without entering the cellar, new glazed doors have been installed.
The Tabernacle, is a unique and inviting space that seamlessly blends old-world charm with contemporary sophistication. It has been transformed into a haven that celebrates its heritage while embracing a fresh aesthetic. Visitors can now immerse themselves in a refined atmosphere that exudes both elegance and a sense of history.
